NAD+ IV Therapy in Edmonton

Dr. Muradov offers Edmonton IV NAD Therapy.

NAD Background

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is present in all cells of the body and is crucial for cell viability and function.

NAD+ is a cofactor essential for operation of the Krebs Cycle and Electron Transport Chain for body wide ATP production.

The phosphorylated metabolite of NAD+, NADP+ with its redox couple NADPH drives a number of reactions, including cholesterol and nucleic acid synthesis, and regeneration of glutathione.

NAD+ activates Sirtuin pathways of which, Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) is the pathway associated with longevity.

The clinical importance of maintaining cellular NAD+ levels was established initially with the finding that pellagra, which is characterized by diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia and death, could be cured with foods containing the NAD+ precursor niacin (Vitamin B3). Our Naturopaths tend to give Niacinamide during IV therapy - Niacinamide and Niacin are chemically interconvertable.

Cellular concentrations of NAD+ have been shown to decrease under conditions of increased oxidative damage such as aging which is partly why NAD+ is given as a longevity promoting substance. Interventions targeted at restoring NAD+ levels have been shown in animal models to support healthy aging and improve metabolic function and cognitive function.

Our clinic usually doses NAD+ Intravenously anywhere from 250-2000mg. However, doses between 250-500mg are most often given for fatigue whereas doses beyond 1000mg are typically for substance withdrawal.

NAD+ Uses

Our Naturopaths tend to suggest NAD+ IV Therapy in a few common scenarios: Fatigue, Longevity, Substance Withdrawal and issues where mitochondrial function is thought to be affected like Fibromyalgia.

NAD+ as a treatment is relatively new however robust data exists for NADH (reduced version)

One such study "Therapeutic effects of oral NADH on the symptoms of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome" where oral NADH (10mg) in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome improved Fatigue, Cognition, muscle aches and weakness and sleep. In our experience, the use of IV NAD Therapy provides much more robust results that oral NADH, but our Naturopaths often recommend NADH as a bridging treatment between NAD+ IV Treatments.

Other studies exist evaluting NADH and CoQ10 for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with positive results as well. So CoQ10 is often an oral consideration our Naturopaths suggest in conjunction with IV NAD+ Therapy.

However our Naturopaths have a preference for using NR in conjunction with IV NAD+ as NR has been shown to effectively increase NAD+ levels in the blood.

IV NAD Administration

IV NAD Therapy is usually given over 1-2 hours for fatigue, and 3-12 hours for substance abuse.

Our Naturopaths often suggest front loading the IV NAD with a few consecutive days of administration at the outset. However, once weekly treatments are efficacious as well, with patients needing a booster ever 2-4 weeks in many cases which is why we insist on some sort of oral NAD+ repletion.

NAD+ can give profound nausea when given too rapidly.

Infused NAD+ is rapidly and completely removed from the plasma (taken up by cells) for the first two hours of an administration.

Enzymes indicative of hepatic stress such as the intrahepatic LD and AST and the post-hepatic (bile duct) enzyme GGT all decline immediately following NAD+ IV Therapy suggesting that the integrity ofthese tissues is in fact enhanced following NAD IV Therapy.

Naturally, our Naturopaths have found that the older a client is, the larger magnitude of effect we see from NAD treatment, as tissue levels of NAD+ naturally decline with age.

NAD+ and Withdrawal

IV NAD was originally used for alcoholism and it appears to be less effective for tobacco and marijuana. For marijuana and tobacco, NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) is one of our top Naturopathic recommendations typically. Our Naturopathic Doctors often use Vitamin C, B1 and B3 in addition to NAD+ for alcohol cessation.

For substance abuse, NAD IV Therapy can be anywhere from 3 - 10 consecutive days.

Alcohol, Cocaine and Crystal meth are thought to be the best candidates for NAD IV Therapy.

Benzodiazepines (lorazepam, clonazepam, diazepam) are thought to be the hardest (may require up to 15 days).

Within a handful of NAD treatments often reported calmness, clarity of thought as well as a reduction in cravings and improved energy are seen.
